In 1978, the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, under head coach Bear Bryant, represented the University of Alabama in the college football season. This was their 84th overall and 45th season in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). They played home games at Bryant–Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa and Legion Field in Birmingham. The team finished the season with an impressive 11-1 record, winning the SEC championship and the national title after defeating Penn State in the Sugar Bowl. Notably, Alabama's costumed 'Big Al' mascot made its official debut this season, appearing at the Sugar Bowl.
