Home Tutor First Meeting Checklist: Questions Parents Should Ask
The first meeting with a prospective home tutor helps parents assess teaching style, set expectations and check whether the arrangement suits the student. Clear answers and a realistic plan matter more than big promises.
Discuss learning needs
Explain the class, board, subjects, current difficulties, school timetable and upcoming assessments. Ask how the tutor will identify gaps and adapt lessons. A short sample lesson can help both sides assess fit.
Ask about teaching
- How will sessions be planned?
- Will the student solve questions independently?
- How will homework and test practice be handled?
- How often will parents receive updates?
- What happens if a class is missed?
Confirm arrangements
Agree on days, duration, fees, payment timing, materials and cancellation rules. Clarify travel charges or extra-session costs and keep the agreement in writing.
Prioritise safety
Check relevant qualifications and experience, verify identity and ask for references where appropriate. Set clear communication boundaries and ensure parents can raise concerns respectfully.
Review progress
Look for improved understanding, independent attempts and consistent practice. Marks can take time to change, so consider attendance, confidence and quality of work too. Avoid guarantees of full marks in a fixed number of days.
