Passkey Setup Guide: Secure Your Accounts Without Relying Only on Passwords
Passkeys are designed to reduce reliance on passwords and resist common phishing attacks. Availability differs by service and device, so use each platform’s official setup instructions.
How passkeys work
A passkey uses cryptographic credentials associated with a service and unlocked through a supported device method. It avoids typing a reusable password at sign-in, but does not eliminate every account-security risk.
Set one up carefully
- Open the official app or type the website address yourself.
- Open account security or sign-in settings.
- Select passkey and follow the prompts.
- Test sign-in before removing older methods.
- Review recovery email, phone and backup options.
Plan for device changes
Check whether credentials sync through an account or remain on a device. Keep recovery methods current and secure. For work accounts, follow organisational policies.
Keep other protections
Update software, use a screen lock and enable multifactor authentication where available. Never approve an unexpected sign-in prompt or share recovery codes with someone who contacts you.
Avoid common mistakes
- Setting up on a shared or untrusted device.
- Leaving recovery email unprotected.
- Trusting unexpected sign-in links.
- Assuming one passkey protects every account.
